From design and finance to construction and maintenance, our work is predominantly consultancy based. This means that the challenges you'll face are mostly commercial. To a lesser extent, they'll be maintenance and people focused too. And although there may be the opportunity to work toward a professional qualification in some instances, the emphasis here is more on building up training and experience on the job.

This part of the business is all about smaller projects such as schools, bridges and local airports - the kinds of projects that have a big impact in local communities. As such, your work will be focused almost purely on delivery, with a much smaller element of ongoing maintenance. Your technical skills will therefore be tested to the full, although commercial insight and people skills will also prove useful. And you'll work towards achieving a professional qualification.
Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering
Working across all major infrastructure markets, we deliver civil engineering projects that are complex, asset-based and service driven.
As the name suggests, this is civil engineering on an impressive scale. The projects here range from road and rail to processing plants and major airports, and they're all big. As such, all the roles we offer are focused on delivery. Maintenance features too, but is a comparatively minor part of the work. If you're going to make an impression, technical ability is paramount, although people and commercial skills are also important. This is a specialist field, so you'll work towards gaining a professional qualification.

A major building contractor with a nationwide network of regional offices, we design and deliver a huge range of construction and refurbishment projects.
From local schools and small offices through to major hospitals and factories, we deliver projects that directly improve lives and communities. Roles here are first and foremost about delivery, although there is some consultancy involved. Commercial and client relationship management work will occasionally feature, although the challenges you'll face will be predominantly technical. This is why the achievement of a professional qualification will be one of your main aims.

We provide leading-edge mechanical and electrical services to clients across the building, engineering and power sectors of the construction industry.
Engineering is one of our broadest areas, offering a mix of big and small projects in diverse sectors. There is a small design consultancy element to our work, although project delivery will present you with the vast majority of your challenges. Your technical abilities will therefore be fully put to the test, and you may, from time to time, have to draw on your commercial acumen and strong people skills too. This is an area where the achievement of a professional qualification is essential.

All the projects here are small scale and focused purely on improving the places where local communities live, work, learn and meet. Our work is entirely centred around delivery and bringing the projects to life. So although client management ability and commercial acumen are important, it's your technical skills that will prove the most valuable. Development at Mansell follows a clearly defined path, and will see you working towards a professional qualification.

Balfour Beatty Rail undertakes projects of all sizes, from massive commuter track builds down to local level-crossings and small-scale point renewals. Most of our work is aimed at delivery, although initial consultancy and post-build maintenance are also part of our offering. The nature of our projects means that technical skills are crucial, but it will also help if you're confident working with clients and tackling commercial challenges. And although the training will be mainly aimed at the gaining of qualifications, you will get some opportunity to learn on the job too.

The consultancy part of the group, we deliver professional services and infrastructure projects in key areas such as transportation, power and water.
Most of the projects at Parsons Brinckerhoff are small-scale and locally focused, although we do sometimes take on much larger projects too. Whatever the size, the work we do is highly specialised, and all our roles are consultancy based. Therefore technical skills will, by some distance, prove your most valuable asset. People skills and commercial acumen will still be useful, though. Given the nature of our work, development here is geared towards the gaining of professional qualifications.

Utilities is a broad and diverse area, so the work here is split evenly between small projects such as network repairs, and much larger works like civil engineering infrastructure solutions. Our roles are diverse too, offering a blend of delivery, maintenance and, to a lesser degree, consultancy. As such, technical ability, people skills and commercial insight are all equally important if you are to succeed. The training here is every bit as balanced, with a shared emphasis on professional qualifications and practical, on-the-job training.

And rather than studying for a qualification, you'll gain your experience and training while working on live projects.
