Lucy: Graduate Quantity Surveyor

BSc Commercial Management
and Quantity Surveying,
Loughborough University

Balfour Beatty sponsored me throughout my studies at Loughborough University. After a successful placement year I couldn’t wait to join the company, especially with the chance to work on some of the most interesting projects in the UK and abroad.

Since joining, I’ve been working on the
King’s Cross Northern Ticket Hall project. Currently, I’m helping to look after the subcontractor accounts within the civil engineering works for the Ticket Hall. I’m finding the project a great experience as the nature of the project is multi-disciplinary, including civils, building, fit out and mechanical and electrical aspects. Throughout the duration of the project I will have the opportunity to get involved with most of these aspects, which is a rarity on most traditional civil engineering projects. It’s a massive undertaking and most of my time is taken up with recording variations of work, assessing applications for payments and getting involved with the monthly cost-reporting.

The other great thing about Balfour Beatty which makes it stand out from other companies is the excellent training and career development available to graduates. We’re actively encouraged to develop our own career, and in collaboration with our managers, goals and targets are set to keep us focused and progress.

I can see my long-term future here as each new project to be undertaken seems as interesting and challenging as the last. I’d like to continue my development within the commercial team and gain my chartership with the RICS. I think that Balfour Beatty have great opportunities for graduates.
