I’m working on the £370 million A3 Hindhead project, which involves building a tunnel through the Devil’s Punch Bowl – it’s going to be the longest road tunnel on land in the UK. I’m looking after the site clearance and the fencing sub-contractors. I’m also looking after the consultation between the landscape, ecological and archaeological consultants, essentially programme managing the early works to tie in with the construction team.

We have been commended for our care with the site clearance work in what is an area of special scientific interest. We have taken optimum care for the wildlife and protected species.

The reason I joined Balfour Beatty was because it offers this wide range of projects in different areas of civil engineering, as well as offering experience on an international basis. This is a fantastic, comprehensive graduate training scheme, which is well known around the country.

I usually have more than the required number of meetings with my mentor, as per the Institution of Civil Engineers chartership training agreement. She’s always available for any sort of support and guidance. My supervising engineer is our project director, who closely follows and encourages my day-to-day personal development and training needs in terms of ICE chartership.

So it’s worked very well for me and I’m proud to be part of the Balfour Beatty training agreement. I love the element of off-the-job training courses, where graduates from different areas of the business come together. It helps us in developing our contacts, networking for the future and getting a wider understanding of the projects Balfour Beatty is involved in. The company involves its graduates in the different in-house competitions between the different companies, for example, simulated business management and presentations to the ICE or NCE. One of the in-house competitions that we had was the ‘Chairman’s Graduate Prize for Innovation’ titled the ‘Big Idea’, in which I finished a runner-up. I got the opportunity to present my idea, which was an environmental constraints planner, to the Chairman. It was appreciated a lot and I hope it becomes useful within the company.
