Dipesh: Section Manager

BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering,
Nottingham Trent University

I’m currently a section manager on the East London Line project. This is the joint venture between Balfour Beatty and Carillion – it’s a £363 million rail contract to extend the existing East London Line between north and south London.

The project is split into three sections – north, centre and south – and I’m responsible for a proportion of the civil engineering works within the centre and south sections. What I enjoy most about the project is the diversity of the work I’m involved in.

As my skills and experience have developed, Balfour Beatty has, without hesitation, given me increasing levels of responsibility and prepared me for more senior roles. I’ve had development training in areas such as communication, managing business relationships, leadership, staff development and so on. This is in addition to all of the role-specific training I’ve received. The on-the-job training has enabled me to quickly progress through the ICE training scheme. And throughout everything, I’ve been supported by a supervising civil engineer and a delegated engineer.

Attaining my professional qualification with the ICE has fulfilled one of my many career goals. I feel proud to have achieved such a prestigious accolade that is recognised worldwide. My professional qualification will, undoubtedly, enhance my future career prospects.

Balfour Beatty is always striving to produce and develop new project managers – and sustain and grow the business for the future. Given the continuous training and development opportunities available to me, I’ll be able to work towards a more senior management role leading operational teams and delivering civil engineering projects. It’s great to know that I will be able to make a vast contribution to the ever-increasing demands of modern infrastructure.
